8 Decades of Racing

How This Ride Started

It all started in 1959 with a 33 Ford coupe . Dave Hurst was bit by the competition bug. It wasn't long before he parlayed into being a car chief on a sprint car and winning his first feature event at Terre Haute in 1964. 59 years later he still wants to go !

Hurst Brothers

1979 marked the renaissance of racing on the Beeline Road. Dave had semi retired from from the racing rigors. His sons Dan and John drug in an old 70 Chevelle and a Howe roll cage that Dennis Caves had rode over the wall at Salem Speedway. They mated the two together and struck out to Brownstown to compete in the limited late model class. Dan was supposed to be the driver. While standing in the pit pass line , Dave took it upon himself to hire a local driver named Tony Moore to shake it down the first night. On the ride home that night after sweeping the card, John turned to Dave and said..."Wonder what Dan is going to drive now that we have a driver?".  A couple more years went by in the hardtop class and Dan finally got to drive. While Dan was satisfied and feeling good in the late model, John and Dave wanted a sprint car. They parted out the tin top and started piecing together a sprint car. This first unit was an underpowered , ill handling box that attempted to make sure no success was ever achieved. It did its job. Being hard headed the crew would not quit even in constant defeat. Lessons were learned and the Beeline Bunch started moving forward and achieving some success with better engines and chassis. Some say you have reached the top when you have the things that you dreamed would make you the best when you were just starting out. As a whole we feel confident in our equipment and talents. Come see us !

List of Drivers That Drove a Car Owned, Car Chiefed, or Prepped by One or More of The Hurst Brothers

Every now and then we are approached by a fan and they ask “How many drivers have you guys had”?  Dad will chime in and say “At least a hundred”.  Well the other night John found an old list that he and Dad had started back in the 90’s. There were about 50 on that list. To be fair; not all the listed drivers actually drove a Hurst Bros. owned machine. These drivers drove a car that was owned by others but Dad was the car chief or John built the engine. The two Cali guys drove The Hurst Bros. West unit of Bill Hicks. It had some cool Barnes heads on it.

We didn’t get to a hundred but we aren’t done racing yet. Hurry up warm weather…
